The Design of a Dinner Party

I was asked by blog mate Jocelyn to help her bring her upcoming dinner party to the next level. She wasn’t able to get away on a winter holiday this past year and so decided to invest in hosting an amazing dinner party to celebrate with some close friends. You can read a recap on Joc’s version of the night here. I’m going to give you a little insight into how this dinner party came together from a design standpoint.

We've Got Work To Do

Working moms. Everyone’s on board with modernity, right? ‘80s movies like “9 to 5”, “Baby Boom” and “Working Girl” provided slapstick, heartfelt evidence that gender doesn’t dictate business sense, after all. So why is it that thirty-something years later, I’m writing about the judgement some of the smartest, loveliest, most capable women I know face as they head back to work postpartum? The reaction they’ve got as they return to their careers seems the result of a patriarchal mindset that’s so buried in society’s consciousness that people might not even realize their comments are hurtful. I myself am (kind of) a stay-at-home-mom and have literally had my hand pat by a man who cooed “you’re doing what you should”. It felt so icky! No one has the right to decree what someone else’s family “should” do because everyone, and every situation, is different. And I know mindsets can’t change from one blog post, but the double standard where men go back to work a day after their babies are born with congratulations and a woman who stays at home with her baby for six months (not to mention the 9 months her bod was an actual home for that baby) is questioned, that’s gotta be talked about. Here are stories and thoughts from three working moms. I want to hear yours, too. Type it, share it, shout it!

Congratulations, you’re getting married! Likely one of the first questions people ask you after you’ve chosen your date is “Where are you getting married??” It is all about location, location, location so I’ve put together Lux Events’ Top 5 Wedding Venues to tie the knot in Saskatchewan.

Meet Our New Bloggers!

Since the blog began, it's been delightful to watch our readership at Our Collective Muse grow. We enjoy taking on requested topics, partnering with local businesses, exploring our various interests as we craft our posts, and getting to know people who are doing great things in our community. Beyond those benefits, the friendships formed in OCM have been something special. Today, we wish four of our dear friends much success as they continue with their many other projects-- it's not a cinch to fit everything into a busy life and we're glad to have had their contributions in OCM for as long as we did. So to Makeup Artist extraordinaire Lisa Hallam, documentary-style photographer Tammy Boehmer, Tonic guru Roxanne Woodley, and style maven Kim Davies who is now a BC girl, we wish you all good things and are going to hold you to your "guest blogger" promises! We truly love you all and miss you at meetings already.

But this isn't just a post of reflection. Born from these fond farewells springs exciting news, and that is we are welcoming four new members to OCM! These ladies are the perfect foils to our existing areas of expertise and we're sure you'll enjoy their posts ahead. From interior design and event planning to hairstyling and makeup, the skills of these girls are sure to round out the blog in a wonderful way. Please join me in welcoming the new additions to the Our Collective Muse team: Tamara Bowman, Molly Lux, Kassy Moen, and Holly Decker.

Our Galentine's Day party was incredible thanks to the creative forces of Lux Events, the stunning atmosphere of Green Ark and the many talented vendors who collaborated with us.  Knowing what Molly and her team at Lux Events had planned, I had to pack my camera to capture my favourite bits of the party.  Every turn brought breathtaking details.  From the lush floral table runner by Anthology Home Collection to the intricate details of the delicious Fab Frosting cookies, we were awe.  The party was more beautiful than we had imagined due to our amazing local vendors.  Take a scroll through my favourite party details.
