Putting Your Best Face Forward

Putting Your Best Face Forward

It’s Kels and Kass here again! Our theme this year is “living our best lives” and for us a big part of that is keeping our faces looking clear, plump and youthful! And since there’s only so much that our skincare alone can do, we wanted to introduce you to our little secret....The Face Institute

Dr. Rick Jaggi has recently opened a new clinic, The Face Institute in the heart of downtown Saskatoon. Dr. Jaggi is an Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist), Head & Neck Surgeon, and Facial Plastic Surgeon. At the Institute they offer a menu of facial treatments from facial peels, micro-needling, Botox , filler, and a whole host of other injectables. These are just a few options!

What really makes this clinic stand apart from the rest is that Dr. Jaggi is a Facial Plastic Surgeon. This means he has extensive knowledge and experience working with patients wanting both permanent surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty as well as semi permanent procedures like Kelsi’s injectable rhinoplasty. This clinic is the only one of it's kind in Saskatoon where you can receive such a comprehensive consultation and list of procedures.

The first thing Kelsi and I noticed when we walked in the doors for our consultations, was how elegant and luxurious  the office is. Every detail of the space from the front desk, to the seating area, right down to the wall paper and frosted doors has been so well thought out and beautifully designed. Dr. Jaggi’s wife, Sharmi, designed the space. It isn’t surprising because she has the most exquisite taste in fashion and design. Brilliant, beautiful and accomplished, Kelsi and I can definitely take notes on how to live our best lives from Sharmi 😉

Something we were so surprised by was how warm and welcoming the staff at The Face Institute are! Typically, clinics like this can be cold and impersonal, not so at Dr. Jaggi’s clinic. Nichole , who manages the front desk made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in the door. Nurse Cindy, who performed my service was so calming and I felt completely at ease in her hands. Dr. Jaggi himself was kind, approachable and gave such a thorough consultation. He answered any questions we had and gave us honest recommendations on what procedures would be best for us.

Ok, so time for some real talk in regards to my (Kassy’s) skin. Genetically I’m pretty lucky, my mother and my Baba both have beautiful complexions and they’ve taught me from a young age to take care of my skin. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have things that drive me crazy or imperfections that make me insecure in regards to my face. Since I gave birth to my beautiful baby Addison 7 months ago , I’ve had a myriad of problems pop up. Literally. Most of my problems are with discolouration that popped up during pregnancy. I had a few broken capillaries on my cheeks, pigmentation around my nose and mouth and a dull pallor in general. Not cute. So Dr. Jaggi recommended a Vampire Facial, or micro-needling with a PRP (protein rich plasma) treatment. And boy, am I glad he did!

I first heard of Vampire Facials a couple years ago when Kim Kardashian posted images of herself after receiving this treatment. Side note: anyone who knows me, knows that my love of all things Kardashian is real. So when this treatment was recommended to me I jumped at the chance to try it out! Nurse Cindy is a pro and performed the treatment on me flawlessly.

The first step was to apply a numbing cream on my face and let it sit for approximately half an hour to make sure I was comfortable throughout the procedure. The next step was to take a small vial of blood and spin it through a centrifuge to separate my red blood cells from the plasma which contains all of the platelets which then produce growth factors. This creates the magic on my face by stimulating cell turnover. While I was waiting for my face to be prepped I sat in the most comfortable chair with a cozy blanket and a ginger ale. So lush.

After everything was prepped nurse Cindy laid the chair back and performed the microneedling. She uses a little pen like device that contains 12 needles to quickly puncture the skin. Then she slathered my face with my plasma so that it could penetrate into my skin. It sounds like such a complicated procedure but aside from the small pinch when I had my blood taken I was as comfortable as I am when receiving a traditional facial!

After the procedure was finished I was totally expecting to be beet red. I was a little pink, almost the colour of a sunburn from being outside without sunscreen for an afternoon. I had to leave the plasma smeared on my face for 4 hours after the procedure , but if not for that I probably would have stopped for groceries on my way home. The next day my skin was much more red, like a proper sunburn. By the third day I was almost back to normal. I had a bit of dry flaking for a couple days after that but nothing that the Obagi moisturizer that was recommended by nurse Cindy couldn’t fix.

The results from my treatment were amazing. My skin was so even and plump. My redness was all gone and I swear the fine lines I had had all dissipated. My pores were noticeably smaller and a small scar I have on my cheek was smoother, less red and much less noticeable! The results are undeniable. Dr. Jaggi recommends a series of three vampire facials 4-6 weeks apart to get the full benefits of the treatment. If the results of my first treatment are anything to go by, I can’t wait to see what happens after all 3. I’m already booked for my second!

Now Kelsi is going to share her experience at The Face Institute.  The first thing I wanted to get Dr. Jaggi’s professional opinion on was my nose. It had been bumped and even broken in cheerleading in high school. Getting the bump removed had always been something I was interested in exploring. Through a thorough consultation with Dr. Jaggi, we decided that a non-surgical or injectable rhinoplasty was the best option for me.  The name makes it sound more intense than it was.  Basically, Dr. Jaggi injects a small amount of filler into any areas that need it in your nose. In my case, he injected just above the bump on the bridge of my nose.  It did not hurt at all and was over in less than 5 minutes!  And just like that, the profile of my nose was much more smooth. I achieved exactly the results I was hoping for and can’t believe how quick and painless it was! I got a tiny bruise where the needle was injected, but it was easy to conceal and was gone within a few days.  The area felt slightly sensitive for a few days as well, but I was able to continue on my day as usual following the procedure. No down time required!  I was also instructed to hold off on wearing any eyewear for a few days while the filler settled. Not a problem for me!  The results typically last 10-12 months.  If you have ever considered a rhinoplasty, I would highlight recommend booking a consultation with Dr. Jaggi to discuss if you are a good candidate for a rhinoplasty or a nonsurgical option.

The second thing I discussed with Dr. Jaggi was lip enhancements. I feel like everywhere I look these days, whether at Hollywood celebrities, Instagram stars, and even local ‘it girls,’ everyone is rocking big, full, beautiful lips.  I have always had full lips myself but was still curious to get Dr. Jaggi’s opinion on lip filler.  He noted that my top lip was slightly smaller than my bottom, and considered me a good candidate for a bit of filler to make my lips appear more plump and hydrated.  I was sure to stress to him that I DID NOT want duck lips or to walk out of the office looking like Kylie Jenner. He laughed and assured me that wasn’t his style.

When it came to the actual procedure, I must admit it was slightly more painful than the nose was.  They use a blunt cannula which poses less damage to blood vessels.  It roughly took about 15 minutes from start to finish.  My lips and area above my upper lip swelled up within a few minutes so it was difficult for me to tell what the end result would look like exactly.  I was going back and forth between ‘it didn’t make enough difference’ and ‘it made too much difference,’ so I decided that must have meant I got just the right amount [Symbol]  I did not experience any bruising. The injection sites on either corner of my lips were small, easy to conceal, and were gone within a few days.  The area was a bit sensitive for a few days, but again I was able to continue on with my regular scheduled programming.  After about one week, the swelling had settled and I was able to better tell what the results were… and I was so happy! Dr. Jaggi put in just enough filler that my lips still looked like my own natural lips, but were just more plump and hydrated.  The size was not changed, but instead I feel like I now have the best version of my own lips.
