I've been fortunate to have a career that allows me the opportunity to work from home. I love the flexibility of hours - I'm a single Mom so I'm able to enjoy more daytime face-time with my son. I love the lack of dress code - "business-casual" guidelines have always been a challenge because ripped jeans and a top knot IS my uniform. And I love that I can work when my creativity is really flowing - that might be middle of the night editing sessions, or writing mid-day whilst sunning on the deck. I love working at my pace, taking breaks to throw a growing load of laundry on, and of course, making multi-trips to the kitchen for snacks. Sounds pretty perfect, right? I do love it, but sometimes I crave a public space with noise and interesting individuals, inspiring visuals and fresh perspective. You see, working from home alone and avoiding annoying cubical-mates is heaven, but occasionally it gets a bit too quiet. So I set out to find the perfect workspace gem.
There's something inspiring about a bright and uplifting space. I find an atmosphere can make or break my creative flow in an instant, so I always gravitate towards modern, light-filled spaces that aren't cluttered and maintain a relaxed vibe. Collective Coffee West is just that - a beautiful spot and my top choice when working in town. Warm sunlight floods the room thanks to oversized panes that line two walls. Modern, minimal design, a high, open ceiling, and grand communal table round out the thoughtful design. I favor a spot perched in the window with optimal people watching views and a face full of sunshine.
CoCo West is know for some of the best brews around and their fresh-baked cookies are something to write home about. In addition to all that goodness, they offer a fresh and nourishing (vegetarian-friendly) menu. I always have a hard time deciding, but this visit, I opted for a bowl of house made soup and lentil salad - the perfect combination of comfort food on a frosty winter's day. The staff are honest-to-goodness amazing and I'm always sure to know a customer or two - visits with familiar faces are a welcomed break.
If you try it and love it (which I'm certain you will), make sure to visit their starting spot, Collective Coffee. It's not far and really is the OG of Riversdale. You'll find them parked front and centre of the TwoTwenty on 20th. Plus, it's a stone's throw from local favourites, HardPressed and Odd Couple. Grab an Americano and get exploring.
I was lucky to share a coffee and heart-to-heart with friend, Maygs before digging into my day's to-do list - the best way to start any project in my books. So, as much as I love CoCo West for my solo work time, it's really just as great for coffee dates with your nearest and dearest. Regardless of what brings you through the doors, I just know Collective Coffee West will quickly become a mainstay.
