For the first official day of summer, I’ve put together 5 tips for easy summer entertaining- enjoy!
1. Less is more
Less is more in the summer! No need for a formal table setting, everyone is more casual in the summer. When we entertain, we open up the patio doors allowing for kids and dogs to come and go as they please and parents can just relax and enjoy each other’s company.
2. Simple, fresh flavours
We love to barbeque in the summer, and so pairing our meat with easy grilled veggies and fresh salads from our community vegetable garden is the way to go. No need to even turn on a stove or oven. It makes for an easy clean up at the end of the night, especially because most of our dinner parties end in a late night campfire and s’mores.
3. Drinks for everyone
I love to mix a pitcher of a fresh and easy signature cocktail, like a sangria or mojito for my guests to enjoy throughout the evening. It’s easy to make, and your guests really feel like you’ve taken care of them from the minute they step into your home.
4. Beautiful Decor
Beautiful decor is really easy to accomplish in the summer! I cut a couple of fresh bouquets for the table from our garden and place them in a simple water glass for an effortless look. We also turn on the outdoor string lights for a great cozy feel on our patio. I typically keep everything very neutral in terms of linens for the tables, letting the natural colour of the food and flowers steal the show.
5. Don’t Stress
My biggest tip for easy summer entertaining is: Don’t Stress!! If you are constantly concerned with how dinner is, or if your guests are having any fun...they likely aren’t. A relaxed host, is a relaxed guest. Take care of guests when they come in: show them around, where the bar is, where the toys are for the kids and let them get settled in. You need to enjoy the experience of hosting so your guests can enjoy themselves, too. If you have time, throw a fun summer game set like croquet or lawn bowling out. Let guests decide if they want to play or not. You’ll often surprise yourself with how creative things may get.
I want to hear from you: what do you love about summer entertaining?
Happy first day of summer!
