Gift Guide for the Modern Mama
Now that I count myself among the celebrated on Mother's Day, I found myself putting maximum energy into creating the perfect gift guide. Selfish, you say? Maybe. But that I'm sharing my wish list with you to inspire your gifting is rather generous, so let's call it even. And without further ado, here are my top picks for all those lovely ladies who made babies. This is my gift guide for the modern mama.
If you haven't yet heard of Smallprint, click on over and get prepared to wish you could have given everything on the page to your mom when you were five. Smallprint captures the fingerprint of a child in wearable keepsakes, and when I say wearable, I actually mean it. From dog tags to toggle-clasp necklaces, these make an ideal gift for a stylish young mom. In fact, there are so many styles to choose from, I recommend a Smallprint gift card: it shows your sentiment but still allows her to choose the length and style that suits her best.
What all moms want is more family fun, and a picnic blanket is just the thing to encourage the whole crew to spend some time outside together. This circular Tofino Towel from Tonic on 2nd Ave (or Farminista.com) feels super current with its bold graphic and is not too thick for beach hauls if you'd rather sit near the sand.
I'm sure you've heard how good silk is for your skin and hair: it puts an end to nighttime hair breakage because hair glides on it rather than rubs, it's hypoallergenic, and you'll have way fewer bedtime wrinkles in the morning. The only complaint I've heard about silk pillowcases is how slippery they are in bed. Well, Saskatchewan's own Therapie has solved the case with their dual-design featuring a signature bamboo fabric on the bottom side. And just when you thought mom couldn't love a Therapie gift more, they've introduced a deep blue colour which is proven to give the maximum minutes of restful sleep. Now, that's something every mom can use. Find Therapie pillow cases at Sleepers Mattress Factory, both Awl Shop locations, or online.
Flowers are THE traditional Mother's Day gift because hey, they're always a hit. This year, why not opt for a twist on the classic with an arrangement she can enjoy whether she's indoors or out. Blossoms and sister store, Anthology create gorgeous bowls of plantlife that can live on the deck or enjoy a starring role as a dinner centerpiece. And, unlike a bouquet, your mom can enjoy this gift all season long.
Fact: moms need coffee. And whether the mom on your list is a coffee snob like moi or you're subtly encouraging her to ditch the giant tin of Folgers she keeps in the freezer, a bag of locally roasted beans is the gift for her. Museo has been a Saskatoon favourite since 2007 and offers seasonal mediums, decaffeinated, and dark espresso roasts, all roasted and packed fresh in-house at their beautiful Broadway location. (Bonus points for also gifting her a grinder and french press!)
Believe it or not, this pretty tote is a diaper bag, complete with changing pad. If you're a new mom, let me just talk to your S.O. for a moment: I know you think, "she's got a diaper bag" but let me assure you that two isn't a crowd when it comes to accessories. The chic and structured Matt & Nat Raylan from Spareparts is extra pretty in Lilac and can easily house wipes, diapers, toys, and whatever else a day brings. And after carrying the same tote for who-knows-how-long, trust that she'll be so happy to switch things up.
Quite literally rounding out the list is the city's best macaron. Little Bird Patisserie offers these delightful 'cookie' confections in several delicately-flavoured colours. If your mom has tried a macaron, she loves them. If not, you have just gifted her a new favourite treat. Also worthy of noting is that Little Bird hosts High Tea every Sunday and is currently taking reservations for their Mother's Day High Tea, so do give a ring a ding.
And that's that! Thanks to Global Morning for having me on to show these products in live action, and thanks to you for reading. ;)
