7 Little Splurges to Beat the Winter Blahs

7 Little Splurges to Beat the Winter Blahs

If you live in the middle of Canada and feel like January has somehow lasted for months, you may have the winter blahs. Luckily, I've got just the prescription for you: some sunny retail therapy. From fighting frizz and finding happier hues to rubbing on a tropical scent that will send your nose into vacation mode, these are my recommendations for gifting yourself some mid-winter delight.

Let's start with a game-changer: saying goodbye to static and frizz. I'm telling you, no matter how many days I skipped my hair wash, the top of my head has been stray-hair city and my ends have been frazzled like yikes. The solution? A new hair routine from Surface (the 'after' effect posted to the right, obviously).

Fighting frizz actually starts in the shower, so if you've been trying to just spray things better, you're already too late. No matter your hair texture, Surface's unique Curls line is the right fit for this dry weather. It has cocoa butter in it that's loaded with hydrating botanicals as well as glycoprotein, a sugar protein that meshes the cuticle to the cortex. In simple terms, glycoprotein seals in moisture and makes each hair incredibly smooth. Finishing with Surface's new Curls Smoothing Cream is the topper, though: it acts like Spanx for your hair, taming even damaged ends into submission. And that Bassu oil and Trinity protein on the end? They're my favourite products to use in combination after a wash, maybe ever. I first learned about them when I was trying to grow my hair out (mission accomplished, btw) and the names kept popping up whenever I'd ask someone their secret. Truly, those two are my JAM. Can't imagine there was a time where I didn't use product in my wet hair-- but I guess that's why it kept breaking, huh?

I should note that although Surface is an international brand, it's family-owned and operated right here in Saskatoon. My friend Jackie actually works in product development, her hubby Clay does the design work, and her dad Wayne Grund is the patriarch of the company. If that last name sounds familiar, it's because Mr. Grund is a literal superstar in the cutting world. I still think it's neat that they live here and I know them. Find the entire Surface lineup at Visions or click here to locate a salon retailer near you.

I don't know about you but when I look out the window, literally everything is grey: the sky, the ground... I just want a break! Enter a poppy wallet like the Sidney Tab Clutch from Fossil ($65, available at Spareparts). It puts me in mind of Valentine's Day and Springtime which you know makes me happy.

Also from Spareparts, these Kate Spade Rose Tort Fade Bayleighs ($160) have just a bit of sass with a slight cat eye and pink ombre hue but will still match everything with ease. A new pair of shades gives you a new outlook, which is exactly what we need by February. Bonus points if you take them on a hot holiday!

If you've never visited the Cat Lab (216 21st Street Saskatoon, upstairs), put it on your to-do list. Owner and shop operator, Lucy Laurin creates fantastic scents for her clients, including "Exotic", which smells sultry and invigorating like a hot summer night spent on your own private beach. Let it take you there.

I've been spending an awful lot of time inside, which means my colouring is rather pallid. No matter if you're uber pale like me or just want to bring some glow to your cheeks, SST's Energy Blush Duo ($32) is a surefire way to perk things up. SST is nationally distributed but is Saskatoon-owned-and-operated. The line offers mineral cosmetics free from parabens, talc, and boron nitrides. Don't you love when you can support local AND look fab?

Also from SST is Hydrating Lipstick ($24) that will both combat your winter-related chapped lip problem (thanks to vitamin E, grapeseed oil, and cocoa butter) and change your pout to an optimistic coral-pink. Plus, this shade is called #XOXO, which only makes me love it more!

Maybe the simplest pleasure on the list is a new pair of bright socks. No matter if you're going to a party and know your tootsies will get attention or if you have to wear shoes all day and no one will know about your sock sitch but you, it feels great to know your feet look happy. This InStance pair ($20, Spareparts) are literally the most poppy ones I could find!

So put on a smile, jump in the car, and go put some cashola back into the economy! (It's an everyone-wins deal when you think of it that way, or so I tell my husband.)
