Being the beauty junkie that I am, I have always been attracted to beautiful, long eyelashes; whether natural or otherwise. In the past, I had tried out eyelash extensions, but had been dissatisfied with the results. Often times I was left with unnatural, plastic-looking lashes, which only looked full for a few days. When the extensions shed, they would painfully poke me in the eye. I happily went without lash extensions for a few years and would apply false ones when I wanted a little something extra.
Then recently, I started noticing a few of my friends and acquaintances rocking the most beautiful, long, soft, full, lash extensions I had ever seen. Over the past few months, I probably asked four or five different girls where they got their lashes done. Without fail, the continued response was “Eva at Eyelusionz.” Finally, this fall, I caved in and decided to treat myself to some lashes by Eva.
When I arrived at the lash studio downtown, I was greeted by this friendly face. Eva welcomed me and quickly got down to work. I laid on the comfortable bed and cozied up in the warm blankets. First, Eva always starts by cleansing the lashes and surrounding area, so she is working with a clean palette. Next, she places white pads under each eye, to use as she works.
Next, Eva asked me what style or look of lashes I was after. I told her that while I like a dramatic look, I would leave it up to her to choose the most flattering style for me. I trusted her professional expertise. I could tell this lady knew what she was doing. Eva told me that the lashes she works with come in lengths 6-19, but the longest she typically uses is 16. We decided to use a variety of lengths, up to a 14.
The next choice to make is the level of curl. The lashes at Eyelusionz are available in B, C, D, and L curls. B is the least amount of curl, while L is the most (almost a crimped look). Eva showed me samples of the different curl options. I expressed that I wanted the lashes to help open my eyes, so Eva suggested mixing the level of curl. On my lower row of lashes, we used an L curl to give lift, while on the upper rows, a C curl was used. I appreciated how each client receives a custom set of lashes, based on the shape of their eye, as well as the style they are going for.
After the length and curl of lash was selected, you really just get to sit back, relax and enjoy the process. New sets of lashes typically take 2+ hours. I was a little anxious to be laying still for that period of time, but my mind was put at ease when I was told to let Eva know if I was in any discomfort or needed a break. Luckily, that never happened. Eva said most people sleep the whole time, but I wanted to get to know this lash goddess so we chatted throughout most of the appointment.
Eva is originally from Hague, SK, but moved away when she was just 18, to start her career in the industry. She began as a hairdresser in Lethbridge, where she made a name for herself. She won Canadian Hairdresser of the Year in 1989 and began to gain confidence in herself and her skills. I was amazed at all of this lady’s accomplishments; she even had her own T.V. show at one time!
Eva got into the lash business a few years ago, after enrolling in a lash class, for the purpose of making a trip to New York tax deductible. Eva was a natural from the beginning. At her first class, she was asked to become a lash educator, due to the fact that her skills stood out. After her training, Eva’s life was a whirlwind. She was in a different country or city every week, including Australia, Nigeria, Germany, England and the U.S., to name a few, traveling and teaching her art of lashes.
After traveling the world for several years, Eva recently returned home to Saskatoon to be close to her family, while continuing to pursue her gift of lash extensions. She moved into a larger studio location downtown and now has several staff working for her. Eva trains each of her employees until she is confident in their skills. Her granddaughter Morgan, is one of the lash dolls working at Eyelusionz. Eva’s business is quickly growing as word spreads about the unique lashes she creates.
Eva continues to go where no one has gone in the lash industry before. She recently won first place in the Fantasy Lash category, in a Las Vegas lash competition. As if that wasn’t enough, Eva has developed an app called My Lash Book, which is designed for lash technicians to design lashes customized to individual client’s eyes, store client information, and book appointments. And finally, Eva recently held 3 international lash summits, including one in Saskatoon, to help educate and further develop the skills of lash technicians. There is nothing this woman can’t do!
By the end of the appointment, I felt like I had just made a new best friend in Eva! She was so inspiring and easy to talk to. Not to mention I was absolutely THRILLED with the outcome of my lashes. They were long, soft, voluminous, and sexy; exactly what I wanted. I have since maintained my lashes and have loved them thoroughly from one fill to the next. I am now the one constantly being asked by others where I get my lashes done, and of course I send them to Eyelusionz by Eva.
