Meet Phoenix Laurén

Meet Phoenix Laurén

Ever since we started Our Collective Muse, I have wanted to do a blog post on my friend Kaitlin, better known as Phoenix Laurén.  Quite simply, she is one of the coolest people I know.  She is a singer, songwriter, fashionista, artist, and the best part, she is from Saskatoon!  She recently moved out to Vancouver to pursue her dreams. We caught up for a visit while I was in Van this summer, and Kaitlin showed me around the city.  Keep reading to get to know Phoenix.

Tell our readers who might not know you, a bit about yourself....
First and foremost I am a lover. I was created in love, and now I live to exemplify a perfect love I know is possible. I am a creator. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than my greatest passion: music. I am a singer, and a songwriter. I am motivated to move people in my craft and every day lifestyle. My goal to be able relate to others, and help people, especially women feel known and understood.

Favourite things about Vancouver?
Well, its obvious - but the natural beauty and the weather of Vancouver certainly doesn't hurt! But I do truly love the opportunities here. You have to push to get ahead, there is a lot more competition and a lot more people than back home - but there are also more outlets for creativity. One of the reasons I moved here was to get out of a certain complacancy I felt I had fallen into. I wanted to get away from living a convenient life, and live an intentional one. Vancouver has given just that to me over the last year. I am where I'm supposed to be, and that's happiness.

Favourite things about Saskatoon?
The people! I have traveled the world and come to realize you cannot beat the community that Saskatoon has to offer. I miss it every day.

Favourite blogs/websites?

Website: Fashion Gone Rogue

I am a big fan of your fashion and style.  How would you describe your  style?
Honestly, I dress how I feel. I use fashion as an expression, so simply put - I wear what I like. I dress for myself and only myself. I am not sure I could describe my style with a certain word or category - but my goal is to always be evolving. As I change, and grow, so does my style and fashion choices.

Where do you find your fashion inspiration?
I try to glean inspiration from all sorts of different outlets from ethnic prints to exotic animals. Thanks to social media, it's so easy to stay connected with fashion fads and trends.

Who are your favorite fashionistas? Who's closet would you most like to raid?
Nyané Lebajoa, Amanda Shadforth, Emily Cocklin to name a few current gals rocking the fashion scene. But I would honestly love to raid Kylie Jenner's closet! I can only imagine what it must be like!

Favourite places to shop?
I don't think you can beat vintage shopping.

Item in your closet you could not live without?
My black hat - bad hair days are a real issue, as are lazy days. This is a true fix all. Ha! Real talk.

Favourite upcoming or current fashion trend?
Wide leg trousers/flared denim.

Trend you wish would come back?
Shoulder pads- although in a sense I think they are. I don't mean HUGE 80's football shoulders - but a sleek reinvention, intricate and beautiful details. Think BalmainXH&M collab - a lot of strong designs (emphasis on shoulders) but it's still polished and so sexy.

Biggest fashion/style regret?
I can (thankfully) say I don't think I have one. Sure I look back at photos of myself and think, "what an idiot" - but at the time, that's how I chose to express myself, and what made me happy. You live and you learn, and I believe style should be an ever growing progression.

Tell us a bit about what you have going on music wise right now and coming up?
For the past couple of months I've actually been on a bit of a music 'hiatus' - which has proved to be one of the more challenging seasons of my life. It's been for a number of different reasons, but mainly I am gearing up to put out some brand new music - which I'm so incredibly excited about! So I've taken some time for myself, to regain focus, on what I want, and what I want to go after and conquer within the music industry. I've been writing, and realizing just what music is and means to me… and I gotta say, I'm very excited for the future!

How would you describe your musical style?
I say it's mostly soul. I'm currently more moving into a future RnB sound as opposed to an old soul throwback style I was leaning heavily on. But its definitely under the Soul/RnB umbrella.

Favourite artists?
Lauryn Hill still takes the top spot - but I also love D'Angelo, Miguel, Jhene Aiko, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder… ahh too many to name. Beyonce… obviously. ;)

Current favourite songs?
Sorry - Justin Bieber - I cannot help myself! It's tooooo catchy! Also, Lyin King - Jhene Aiko

All time favourite song?
Pretty well any song on the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album. Any mood, whether I feel on top of the world, or my lowest low, her songs speak to my soul.

Song you can't stand right now?
I almost feel bad for saying it, as if the universe might punish me… but… truth is I literally cannot stand "Hello" by Adelle.

Thoughts on Drake's Hotline Bling video?
I couldn't help but chuckle a little at this one. Aside from my new found confidence in my own dancing abilities, this video pretty well sums my thoughts up nicely:

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Married for one. (which is totally nuts because getting married has never really been on my radar.) But I found the greatest man, who also follows his passion as a career. I definitely see a great deal of traveling in our future, building our empire(s) together!
