As the leaves change color and our evenings get cooler, I tend to reflect on all things summer. This Tuesday marks the first day of autumn and I already want to return to carefree summer days. I asked my blogmates to share a bit about the season (their favorite moments, how they like to spend a day in our city, what they're wearing and all about trends) and I happily documented their summer style and memories. We're so lucky to have beautiful weather continue throughout September so it really doesn't feel like we've left summer at all. Let's hold onto summer just a little bit longer with OCM bloggers, Kelsi, Erin, Maygen and I.
This summer there were a lot of extra special moments for me, including my master's convocation, bridal showers, bachelorette party in Vegas, honeymoon in Hawaii, and my wedding of course! It was definitely a summer for the books and one I will never forget.
Owning a local downtown business, my husband and I are always busy but we love to escape to Bottega for a bite, whenever we get a chance. It helps that Bottega is right next door to our store, Banjo. Given that I have a serious sweet tooth, my favourites are the house made semifredo and my husband loves the cheesecakes. Morning, noon, or night, we can always find an excuse for dessert at Bottega.
This outfit is a good representation of my daily style, as it is laid back, yet a little girly. I have been living in my boyfriend jeans lately and love pairing them with more structured or feminine pieces, like this floral blazer.
This summer I was all about crop tops & high waists, but that won't cut it for the fall. Now I'm making room for ponchos and capes in my wardrobe. Autumn is the perfect time to wear these transitional pieces as outwear, before it's too chilly.
I had one of the best summers of my life this year, my favourite moments of the summer were all the simple moments spent with my 3 year old daughter. Every monday night we had a date at River Landing to dance along with the latin dancers and enjoy our favourite music along the river. We already miss those warm nights and the music in the air. Other moments I'll never forget of summer 2014, would be exploring Montreal and attending Osheaga Music Festival - time of my life.
With my job, I have the luxury of a very flexible schedule which allowed me and my little Kenzie to enjoy every drop of summer in Saskatoon. A typical day for my girl and I this summer consisted of attempting to explore every park in Saskatoon, visiting all the water parks, coffee and froyo dates by the river, and picking flowers for our hair... with a photo shoot squeezed in here and there.
My spring and summer wardrobe this year was very basic. I don't tend to wear a lot of colour... ever. I own black, grey, and white, if you looked in my closet it seems a little sad. My style is simplistic, monochrome... but always with an edgy touch. I love to mix something like a cute leather skirt, with the most basic mens white T, and layer it up with gold or silver jewellery. Stacked BIG jewellery was one of my favourite trends of the year, which I will completely carry on into fall.
This fall I am totally excited about thick knit chunky scarves, with my favourite leather blazer, and bowler hat. I'm sad to see summer go, but fall fashion is definitely my favourite. I also can't wait to bring out my faux-fur vest collection, which is a mix of vintage and new pieces. My feet are ready to wear leather booties again, cute combat style boots, and I'll probably wear my chunky wedges until the snow falls. OH, and plaid... I live in cozy, red, oversized plaid.
My favourite summer moments are the easy, simple kind like riding my bike on a calm day and slowing beside the pond to see the families of ducks swimming together. I also loved this year's lake vacation to Waskesiu with my whole family. It will be the last vacation where my brother and I are still the babies, being that I'm pregnant, so it was an especially dear time for me (and I don't care how selfish that sounds!).
Saskatoon has so many shops that welcome you in to browse along your city stroll, whether serving as destinations or on a whim at lunchtime. Anthology is one of my favourite places to end up because it's so comfortable and lovely with its rich and modern decor offerings, but it also has items perfect for a spur-of-the-moment buy, like a potted fern to act as a hostess gift for a party that evening or a piece of jewelry that you decide not to resist.
I decided not to "get by" with what I have during my pregnancy but rather, enjoy dressing my changing body with pieces that fit well and make me happy. This colour-blocked scuba top and black high-slit-at-the-back maxi skirt are a couple of pieces I ordered from Asos and though I'm not usually an online shopper, I've found the service very handy for maternity wear!
As for accessories, my silver Michael Kors 5825 (Spareparts, $480) can make a tank top feel special so it's a frequent go-to, and a pop of color is always nice when you do black and white, and the vegan Matt + Nat Malone in green (Spareparts, in store only) makes that impact perfectly
Although these pictures don't reflect it, I loved pastels and pale jeans this summer and wore that trend happily and often. But like everyone else, come fall, I'm attracted to deep plaids. My favourite is always a flannel button-up done in big red and black plaid. This year, I'm most excited to sport a basic white boyfriend (maternity) T with statement necklace, Vince (maternity) pleather-front leggings, with the plaid top tied around my hips just below my baby bump.
This summer I enjoyed the sun and the many incredible local events with my sweet toddler by my side. Highlights included the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Fest, Potash Corp Children's Festival, Potash Corp Firework Festival, River Cinema, Farmer's Market and more. By far the most memorable and joyful moment this summer was the arrival of my beautiful nephew. Since his birth, my son has suddenly become obsessed with babies. Of course, if you met this cute new babe, you'd understand why. I have to add a very memorable event that occurred just the other night. A group of my beloved friends surprised me with the most amazing birthday celebration. A room of truly wonderful people, great conversation, contagious laughter and love... Oh, and my Mother's famous chocolate cupcakes made an appearance too! I'm still on cloud nine :)
As much as we enjoyed checking out local events, our home was the setting for some of the best of summer. Bubble blowing, splashing in the pool, popsicle making, chalk art and playing with our four legged pals filled our days. The most beautiful toddler belly laughs could be heard for days and each night I went to sleep with a happy heart, grateful for the moments I shared with my son and family.
I'm a creature of habit when it comes to style. Jeans and t-shirts line my closet but when the weather gets hot, I pull out my favorite maxi dresses. I love them mostly because they're roomy and comfortable, but also like how easily they can dress up or down. This lightweight chambray maxi was a summer favorite. It could be worn in the yard, often acted a bathing suit cover up and it even cleaned up for a night out. My leather jacket is always within reach and it's used to top almost anything off on a cool summer night.
My favorite summer trend was and continues to be statement necklaces and distressed denim. My "mom uniform" consists of mostly jeans and t-shirts so I like how a statement necklace can pull a look together. Ripped denim adds a bit of edge to an otherwise basic look. Heading into fall I look forward to heavy cable knit sweaters, wooly socks (I'm always cold), felt hats and the return of my favorite suede wedge ankle boots.
Thank you to my lovely blogmates for taking the time to be a part of this post. If you don't know already, I simply adore these girls and bet you do too :)
